Substance abuse disorders are among the most challenging mental health issues worldwide, with profound implications for both individuals and society. The increasing prevalence of substance abuse, especially among adolescents and young adults, is a significant public health concern in Nigeria. Substance use disorders (SUDs) are commonly associated with various psychological, social, and medical complications, including addiction, depression, anxiety, and even psychosis (Aliyu et al., 2023).
Psychiatric nurses, as integral members of mental health teams, play a crucial role in the management and treatment of individuals with substance abuse disorders. Their responsibilities often extend beyond the clinical aspects of care to include therapeutic communication, psychoeducation, crisis intervention, and the development of individualized care plans (Olanrewaju et al., 2024). At the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kano, where patients with various mental health conditions, including substance use disorders, are treated, psychiatric nurses work collaboratively with other healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive care. However, while there is a growing body of research on the management of substance abuse disorders, the specific role of psychiatric nurses in this context has received limited attention, particularly in Nigerian psychiatric settings. This study aims to examine the role of psychiatric nurses in the management of substance abuse disorders at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kano, to explore how their interventions influence treatment outcomes.
Substance abuse disorders are increasingly recognized as a significant public health challenge, and effective management is essential for improving patient outcomes. However, despite the important role psychiatric nurses play in managing substance use disorders, their contributions are often undervalued or poorly understood, particularly in Nigerian psychiatric hospitals. The lack of clarity regarding the specific roles and interventions of psychiatric nurses may hinder the effectiveness of treatment and care for individuals with substance use disorders. This study aims to address this gap by examining the role of psychiatric nurses in the management of substance abuse disorders at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kano.
This study focuses on psychiatric nurses working at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kano, and evaluates their roles and interventions in managing substance abuse disorders. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from nurses and the lack of longitudinal follow-up to assess long-term outcomes of nursing interventions. The study is also limited to one hospital, which may not be representative of other psychiatric hospitals in Nigeria.
